Larah Jackson and Nicole Whray became fast friends while working at Sport Clips in Ballantyne. The two wanted to be able to offer a wider array of services, so they put their heads together to start The Hard Part Men’s Grooming, a full-service shop.
After three years of planning, The Hard Part opened in the Commons at Dobys Bridge this past December. The shop has a mancave vibe with a brick accent wall and rolling toolboxes used as salon tables. The nearly 1,300 square-foot establishment features two washing stations and six salon chairs that stylists independently rent.
“While we are cosmetologists, this shop has a barbershop feel,” explained Jackson. “We want it to have a community feel here.”
Jackson was born and raised in Lancaster, and Whray moved here from Boone. They chose Indian Land to open up their shop because of its growth. “So many people are moving here from all over,” said Jackson. “We have different people from all walks of life and that is why we love the area so much.”
The women worried about opening a business during the pandemic, but the amount of business they have received since opening pleasantly surprised them.
“We want customers to feel special when they walk through the door,” said Whray. “We are going to give them the best haircut every time they come in.”
