Pretzel chain brings a taste from the north down south
Philly Pretzel Factory will open its newest location in November

Northern transplants get excited! The Schurr family will open the Philly Pretzel Factory of Ballantyne in early November. The chain is best known for its soft-baked pretzels and pretzel nuggets, known as rivets, along with trays for catering.
Find the Philly Pretzel Factory in The Shoppes at Ardrey Kell, located at the corner of Ardrey Kell and U.S. 521. The northern favorite will move in next to fellow Philly chain, Rita’s Ice.
Mike Schurr and his wife, Sue Schurr are originally from Philadelphia. Mike said he was done shoveling snow and would move south when he retired.
True to his word, Mike retired in 2017 and moved Sue and two of their children, Kim and Matt, to South Carolina in 2018. Their eldest son Michael still lives in New Jersey.
Every time the family visited Michael, they bought pretzels in bulk from Philly Pretzel Factory. “We would freeze them, then try to reheat them in a toaster and add salt to make them taste the same,” said Mike. “But there’s nothing close to when they are fresh.”
“Up north, there is a Philly Pretzel Factory on every corner,” said Mike. “These things are part of the culture up there.”
Mike visited the Philly Pretzel Factory website to see if the pretzels could be ordered online and shipped. “When we went online, we saw that there were franchise opportunities,” he said. “A year and a half later, here we are.”
Every family member will hold a position in the new venture. Mike will serve as the president of the company while Sue oversees bookkeeping. Matt will work as the store manager, and Kim will handle sales and marketing. “We are a very close family,” said Sue. “It is something we grew up with, and we wanted to share it with our kids.”
“We are hoping the transplants come, but we also want to introduce the pretzels to locals as well,” said Mike.
The Pennsylvania-based chain has been around for 20 years and boasts 170 stores across 17 states. This will be the second store in North Carolina.
What’s Cooking
The Pretzel Factory specializes in hand-twisted, soft-baked pretzels. Specialty pretzels include cheeseburger pretzels, hot dog pretzels, Cheesesteak pretzels, cinnamon twists, spicy pretzel sausage, and pepperoni melts. Choose from 12 different dips to enjoy.
