After much anticipation, the Indian Land Soccer Complex broke ground this summer. The complex will feature two synthetic soccer fields (160’ x 300’) with state-of-the-art lighting, a playground, and a community plaza.
“We have outgrown Walnut Creek Park,” Hal Hilot, the county’s parks and recreation director said of the soccer fields. “County residents will come first with our Spring and Fall soccer programs, however, we hope to be able to utilize these fields year-round allowing for soccer clubs and tournaments.”
Located off Harrisburg Rd. next to Harrisburg Elementary School, the complex sits on approximately 10 acres. The complex includes approximately 140 parking spaces, a large shelter, bleachers, and a small walking trail around the perimeter. The community plaza will include restrooms, concessions, and outdoor seating. The complex is expected to be completed by next summer and programming is expected to start by early fall 2022.
The County hired the Charlotte-based architect and consultant firm, Woolpert for the project. The company works on parks and large athletic complexes like this one all over the southeast. “The Charlotte region continues to grow and bring in families,” said Director of Woolpert’s Public Market Andrew Pack. “We can’t build fields fast enough.”
The Indian Land Soccer Complex is one of five components included in the $19 million Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Bond. The Heath Springs Soccer Complex, renovations to the Barr Street Auditorium, construction at the Lindsay Pettus Greenway, and the Indian Land Rec Center expansion and remodel are the other components.
“These projects are a long time coming,” said Hilot. “They show the county’s commitment to the quality of life here.”
Hilot has been with county parks and rec for 32 years and said he has never seen so many projects in the works. He provided some updates on the recreation bond including:
Getting ready to start the master plan for the 84-acre regional park off Hwy. 521 at the edge of the new Roselyn subdivision.
A contractor has been awarded for the Indian Land Rec Center expansion and remodel. They begin moving dirt within the next week.
They plan to put down synthetic turf on Walnut Creek’s two main soccer fields but no timeline on that.
“Our staff is excited,” Hilot said. “There is a lot of anticipation and the impact fees and hospitality fees will allow us to start sooner than later.”
If we were to book this fields, who do we contact?
